It’s 2016!! I’ve always loved New Years. Not just because of New Years Eve but for the first day of a new year. I love the excitement of looking ahead and thinking about all the adventures I want to have and of the things I want to work on or accomplish. I also think it’s important to take some time to reflect on the previous year and all of the changes and growth that it brought. With that in mind, I wanted to take a few minutes to share some of my favourite moments from 2015.
I got married. On August 7th 2015 Jonathan and I said “I do” and became husband and wife. This was by far the highlight of my year. So much time and effort went into planning our perfect day. When it finally came it was more beautiful and more romantic than I could have imagined. I wasn’t expecting to feel any different after our wedding but I really did. Having had the experience of standing in front of our family and friends and declaring our love and devotion to each other was really meaningful. I still get really excited every time I call Jonathan my husband or hear him call me his wife!
I started a new job. The Monday morning after our wedding weekend I started a new job. This was something that I worked so hard for in 2015 and it really was a highpoint in the year to achieve this goal. My previous job was just not for me and I was quite unhappy working there. It was getting harder and harder to remain positive and keep the momentum going, especially in the midst of wedding planning chaos. I’d promised myself that I would get a new job by the end of 2015 and I’m so glad that I kept working towards this goal and didn’t get discouraged. Now I have a job that I really enjoy. I love that I’m learning new things and I have a better work life balance. I am so much happier and I no longer dread Monday mornings.
We travelled to Hawaii. It’s no secret that I love to travel. I feel like every time I go somewhere new I learn something about myself and gain a new perspective on the world we live in. We had so much fun in Hawaii exploring, hiking, and swimming. Jonathan and I were able to spend some much needed time relaxing, just us two, after the chaos of wedding planning. Hawaii is such a magical place and I hope to be able to return one day soon.
So many early morning runs. This is kind of a sad one. This year I started joining Jonathan on his early morning runs. At first it was just about the workout but eventually I started to really enjoy it. We would jog up to the observatory for a panoramic view of the city, ocean, and mountains. We’d try to time it so the sun was just starting to come up as we got to the top of the hill. I loved sharing those quiet moments with Jonathan and always carried that feeling of peace with me for the rest of the day. The sad part about this is I won’t be able to continue jogging in 2016. I recently found out I have metatarsalgia, a painful condition affecting the joints in the ball of the foot. The good news is that it is a treatable condition and I will soon be able to walk without pain and hike again. Unfortunately jogging is likely to aggravate the injury so it’s pretty much out of the question.
We moved apartments. In early 2015 Jonathan and I moved from our downtown apartment to a smaller apartment a little bit farther from town. I loved our old neighbourhood. It was located on the edge of downtown, across the street from a large park, and was walking distance to some of our favourite restaurants. However, our new apartment has more amenities (how did we ever get by without a dishwasher) and we have our own little patio area and garden. Now I’m starting to enjoy the quieter neighbourhood and we are enjoying discovering the good coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance. The most significant thing about this move is that it is saving us quite a bit on rent which will help us get closer to some of our bigger goals for the future.
These are only a few of the highlights from a really wonderful year. I feel so grateful to have had another year of happiness and health for myself and my loved ones and I look forward to what 2016 will bring. Thank you for reading and I hope that you had a happy and safe New Years Eve. All the best for 2016!
