Happy Leap Day to everyone and especially to my friend Lauren, who is taking her own big leap today and embarking on a great adventure. Lauren is one of the most thoughtful, loyal, and caring people I’ve ever met and I’m so grateful for her friendship.
I did a little research on what Leap Day is and to be honest I still don’t really get it. I know that it has to do with correcting the Gregorian calendar but I don’t have a good grasp on how this works or why it’s necessary. I also found lots of information about a very outdated Irish tradition wherein women can propose to men. According to this tradition, if the man refuses a proposal he has to buy twelve pairs of gloves to shield her from the embarrassment of being seen without an engagement ring.
While I’m sure correcting the calender is very necessary, it doesn’t seem to me that there is much to Leap Day beyond that. So, I’ve decided to make up my own meaning for Leap Day. I think from now on February 29th should be the day to take a leap of faith, to follow your dreams no matter how scary they may seem and to put your faith in yourself. So happy Leap Day everyone and to Lauren, who is the first to celebrate the new meaning of Leap Day. I’m so excited for you and I’ll be cheering you on every step of the way!
