Our Wedding: The Details


We got married on August 7th at Merridale Cidery in Cobble Hill, BC. We had originally planned on getting married at a winery in the Okanagon but once we started planning we realized that there would be some really important people who wouldn’t have been able to make it. We liked Merridale because we felt that it really kept with the winery wedding feeling. It was far enough from town that we still felt like it was a “destination” but without having to put our guests in the position of having to pay for overnight accommodation and airfare. We also really liked that the ceremony and reception space at Merridale is covered but open on all sides. We both really wanted to have an outdoor ceremony and reception and this would have allowed us to do so even if the weather wasn’t favourable. Thankfully we had perfect weather on our wedding day.


Most of our flowers were from Rook and Rose. They were really easy to work with and did such a beautiful job. I had originally wanted peonies for my bridal bouquet but of course they weren’t in season in August. Instead the florist suggested using cabbage roses because they have the same big lovely blooms as peonies and have a similar ruffled looking texture. They also created a gorgeous floral hair piece for me and ordered individual blooms for my bridesmaid’s hair. We ordered baby’s breath in bulk to decorate the reception area and for the bridal party. Bunches of baby’s breath were placed in mason jars wrapped in burlap and lace on the dinner tables and hung in mason jars from the backs of chairs at the ceremony site. My sister hand made the bridesmaids bouquets and boutineers for the groomsmen.


We really wanted the reception area to look and feel rustic, romantic, and summery. We decorated with lots of lace, burlap, and blush pink details. We also had plenty of deer details because we love deer!

One of my favourite things about the reception space was that it was right in the orchard. Several times during the reception we looked out and saw deer wandering through the orchard in the evening light.

Merridale Cidery made our wedding cake and I couldn’t have been happier with how it turned out. I sent them a picture of what I wanted it to look like and I was so thrilled when I saw it at the reception. They got it just right! Jonathan was tasked with selecting the flavour since he’s definitely the dessert person in our household. He chose carrot cake with a soft butter cream icing. I ordered our cake topper from Etsy and a cake bloom from the florist. How perfect are those little gold deer?!

The bridesmaids wore the Heidi dress in blush pink from J Crew. I absolutely love this dress and I thought they all looked beautiful in it. The groomsmen looked adorable in matching black suits and blush pink bow ties. Jonathan was really hesitant about wearing a pink bow tie but even he admitted that it looked good and went with our theme.
