Ucluelet Wedding Weekend

In early June Jonathan and I attended our friends’ wedding at Wya Point Resort in Ucluelet, BC. I can honestly say this was one of the best weddings I’ve been to. The weather was perfect all weekend (I’m told this is rare for Ucluelet), the ceremony was beautiful, and the reception was a blast. I had so much fun celebrating this wonderful couple and loved spending time with their family and friends.

The drive to Ucluelet is a bit of an undertaking but it’s also a great way to see some of the stunning natural beauty Vancouver Island has to offer. The road winds its way over a mountain pass and next to gorgeous clear lakes. My mountaineering husband pointed out all the peaks he’d bagged along the way while I concentrated on not getting car sick. We spotted two black bears on the way up. One of them was standing on the shoulder of the road casually eating berries when we came around a corner. It’s the closest I’ve been to a bear and, after seeing those giant paws from the safety of the car, I can say with certainty that I hope I never get any closer to one!

Wya Point Resort has luxury lodge rentals, rustic yurts, or more traditional campsites. The campgrounds, yurts, and lodges are all located in different areas so you never feel crowded. The first night we were there we stayed in a beach front yurt. It was so nice to fall asleep to the sound of waves crashing on the beach and the gas fireplace kept us warm and cozy all night. All of the yurts come equipped with barbeques, cooking supplies, and cedar decks with comfortable Adirondack chairs.

The next day we checked into one of the one bedroom loft lodges. It had floor to ceiling windows facing the beach and a private balcony to watch the sunset from. Most of the wedding guests were staying in the lodges so it was nice to be within walking distance of everyone. The lodges at Wya Point were so beautiful, Jonathan and I want to go back and stay there for a little longer!

I ordered this Tracy Reese dress from Anthropologie to wear to the wedding and I think it hit the perfect note of summery and light without being too casual. I’m always a little hesitant when it comes to ordering online because it can be so difficult to gauge the sizing. Thankfully this dress fit perfectly and I didn’t need to come up with an alternative at the last minute. An empire waist dress is fairly forgiving when it comes to sizing so this dress is a safe bet to order!

The couple was married on the beach under a lace draped arch that was built by the grooms father. After the ceremony there was a cocktail hour on the beach. I could not get over how gorgeous the bride’s dress was. It was soft and feminine with lots of lace and an embellished belt. The bouquet was a massive collection of blooms and ferns in shades of red, white, and rich purple.

The reception was in one of the larger lodges. A buffet style dinner was served on the balcony. After dinner the couple snuck out with my husband, who was their photographer, to take some pictures at sunset. I can’t get over how beautiful the pictures turned out! These two are so gorgeous and their love for each other is so evident. We rejoined the reception in time for speeches, cake, and dancing. It was such a fun evening. The best part was the end of the night when we got changed and joined the bride and groom and a few others on the beach for a bonfire and star gazing. It was such a perfect way to end the evening and I’m so glad I got to spend some time with this awesome couple and their lovely families.

As always I have a few recommendations for anyone planning a trip to Ucluelet or Tofino.

I absolutely loved staying at Wya Point Resort and would highly recommend it to anyone whether they are planning on camping or want to rent a lodge. It’s an awesome backdrop for a wedding and has plenty of options for guests of different budgets to stay at.

We got take away pizza from Abbondanza in Ucluelet. I had the fungi with truffle oil and Jonathan had the sausage pizza. This place is pretty pricey but it was delicious and the portions were huge.

We spent part of an afternoon hiking on the Wild Pacific Trail. This trail offers such beautiful coastal views and is a pretty easy walk. As you walk signs at different view points tell stories about the deadly shipwrecks that occurred along this treacherous coastline.

Thanks for reading! I would love to know, what was the most memorable wedding you attended?
